Operational Certificates

Operational certificates are used to create device identities that are rotated often. Rotating device identities is important in these use cases because:

  • The device identity is used often, typically every time the device communicates elsewhere

  • The device identity might become compromised. Rotating it often, limits nefarious actions.

Usually, operational certificates are owned and managed by the device’s service provider, operator, or factory environment. Automating the onboarding and rotation of these certificates are challenges in the following use cases.
